Moody finalist for new IPCISD Superintendent

By Dolores Hamilton
After several rounds of interviewing applicants for Superintendent of Schools, members of the Iowa Park CISD school board has selected Steve Moody as the lone finalist for the job.

The decision was made during a called meeting Sunday evening at the school administration building, with a unanimous vote of the trustees. "After a process in which Region 9 facilitated and helped us narrow the field of 32 applicants that were very qualified, we feel that we have selected a man of integrity and a commitment to continue to keep Iowa Park strong, and a genuine love of our town," said Board President Steve Fairchild.

"I am honored and I appreciate the opportunity the school board has provided for me to lead Iowa Park Schools as the next superintendent," Moody said Tuesday as he talked with a Leader reporter. "I am vested in Iowa Park and have been with Iowa Park CISD for 25 years. Iowa Park is 'Home'. I care about our school and community and want the best for both. I have worked in the district in many positions and can relate to teachers and staff."

After being hired, there is a 21-day wait period before the new superintendent can sign a contract and officially begin work. On March 6, Moody, who has served the school district as assistant superintendent since 2007, will fill the vacancy left with the retirement of Jerry Baird, who has served in the position for 11 years.

Steve, the son of educators, grew up in Banquete, a small town outside Corpus Christi. After graduating high school, he enrolled at Midwestern State University where he played baseball and earned a BS degree in Education.

Now finishing his 31st year in education, Steve started his career in 1982 at Electra High School as a teacher/coach. He was coaching there when Electra won the state football championship in 1985. In 1988, he moved to Iowa Park to teach at the junior high school while completing work on his masters degree and administrative certification. Following this, Steve was assistant principal at the junior high school from 1990 - 1994; principal at Kidwell Elementary from 1994 - 1999; junior high school principal from 1999 until 2007 when he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Steve and his wife Mickie, a native of Iowa Park, have been married almost 30 years. She has been a second grade teacher at Kidwell Elementary for 23 years.

The Moodys have three children. Their daughter Heather graduated Iowa Park High School in 2002 and is now a first grade teacher. She and her husband Colby Rusk have two sons. Another daughter, Mollie, graduated IPHS in 2006 and is a dental hygienist. She is married to Lance Morton and they have a daughter. The Moody's son Latham is a junior student at IPHS.

"It is an exciting time for Iowa Park CISD. Academically, our students and teachers are excelling in the classroom. After the first round of STAAR tests, our overall student scores are well above the state scores. We continue to make multiple advancements in technology too prepare our students for 21st century learning," Steve commented. "We are also in the construction phase of our bond program and we will see many positive improvements in our district facilities."
