Trustees call election, renew contracts

by Dolores Hamilton
At their Thursday meeting the Iowa Park CISD School Board called a trustee election to be held May 6 to vote on Trustees Place 6 and Place 7. Election judges are Frances Leath and Darlene Phillips. At this time only the incumbents have filed as candidates.
The District of Innovation Plan was reviewed by the trustees, led by Jodi Schlaud.
The 84th Texas Legislature passed HB 1842 allowing eligible Texas school districts to be designated as Districts of Innovation. Districts of Innovation are able to gain local control and obtain exemptions from certain operations of the Texas Education Code. This local innovation plan will allow the Board of Trustees and district staff to make decisions based on the needs of local students, teachers, parents, and community members. The local innovation plan will remain in effect for five years.
Members of the District-level Advisory Committee proposed the following innovations:
School Start Date; Teacher Certification; and Probationary Contracts.
The board will vote on approval at their March meeting.
Trustees also reviewed plans to develop the District Strategic Plan.
Superintendent Steve Moody said school personnel would be making an assessment of needs for each campus and asked each trustee to develop a list. The lists will be presented at a meeting on February 27, where the needs will be prioritized and a proposed plan will be put together to be presented at the March 9 board meeting.
Business Manager Sharon Godwin gave the annual review of the Investment Policy.
During his report, Moody told of being notified of an affordable rental housing application proposed for Iowa Park called Hawk Senior Village. He also spoke of board training on Feb. 20, at Region 9 Service Center. Moody said the current school enrollment stands at 1841.
Contracts were renewed for the following: James Kennedy, Kidwell Principal; Paige Liggett, Kidwell Counselor; Brandi Swenson, Bradford Principal; Brandy Rhoades, Bradford Counselor; Darla Biddy, Middle School Principal; Adam Arredondo, Middle School Assistant Principal; Nona Laminack, Middle School Counselor; Leah Russell, High School Principal; Clifton McFadden, High School Assistant Principal; and Tracey Catlin, High School Counselor.
Also, Cindy Skjelstad, Academic Coordinator; Aubrey Sims, Athletic Director; Jonathan Club, Tax Assessor/Collector and District Operations Director; Sharon Godwin, Chief Financial Officer; Janet Bowling, District Services Coordinator/PEIMS; and Jodi Schlaud, Curriculum & Instructional Technology Coordinator.
At the beginning of the meeting Moody introduced Iowa Park Rotary Club‘s Students of the Month for December and January, Andrea Pedon and Kadie Haswell.
