Ryan Thomas took silver and Dalton Adkins bronze Satrday at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships in Abilene.
Thomas completed a 400-pound squat, 250 bench, and 415 deadlift for a total of 1,065 in the 123-pound class. Mike Barajas of Hidalgo Early College totalled 1,110 to win first place, while Yoakum’s Adrian Herrera placed third with a 1,035 total.
Thomas tied his personal record with the 400-pound squat.
Adkins, competing in the 132-pound class, totalled 1,130 (455 squat, 295 bench, 425 deadlift) to finish third behind state champ Isaiah Mesa of Taylor (1,230), and runner-up Mac Gomez of Zapata (1,185 total).
Adkins tied the state record in the bench (295), and had a personal best with his 425 deadlift.
Teammate Dre Gresham, competing in the 181-pound class, finished 12th with a 1,240 total (470 squat, 290 bench, 480 deadlift).
“I’m proud of these guys,” said Coach Mark Zimmer. “They are blue collar workers. They show up every day at 6:30 in the morning, endure grueling workouts, and sacrifice their own time to maintain their body weight.”
