by Dolores Hamilton
Incumbents were the winners in Saturday’s local school and city elections. Deborah Dyer, who was appointed in February to fill the city council seat of her late husband, Keith, was elected to serve a two-year term in Place 3. Incumbent Tim Sheppard defeated Larry Hayes with 242 votes to 92 for Place 1. Incumbent Sherrie Williams, running unopposed, drew 286 votes for Place 5.
In the Iowa Park school board election incumbent Steve Fairchild defeated Cherrie Bradberry with 338 votes to 235 to retain position at Place 6. Incumbent Jeff Rhoades, running unopposed, received 545 votes to remain in Place 7.
In the county election, the proposition for the issuance of $70-million in bonds for new jail facilities was approved with 2,557 votes for and 2,054 against.
The proposition for the authorization to create a County Assistance District was turned down with 185 votes for and 294 against.
