Joyce Louise Short
1926 – 2009
Joyce Louise Short, 82, passed away Saturday, January 31, at Lake Forest Good Samaritan nursing home in Denton.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at Dutton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Landon Winstead officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home.
Joyce Louise Cates was born in Iowa Park May 9, 1926, the daughter of Clara Eaton Cates and James W. Cates. She attended Iowa Park schools. In August, 1948 she married Hermon Grant Givens in Amarillo. He preceded her in death in 1989. She spent the majority of her life as an Air Force wife, traveling the world including Surbiton Surrey, England and traveled throughout Europe. They moved to Dayton, Ohio for six years and then to Japan for four years. Subsequent moves included Orlando, Florida and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Several years later, Joyce became reacquainted with Lowell Short at a high school reunion in Iowa Park and they were married in December 1993 at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa Park. She was a member of the Iowa Park Garden Club, the Iowa Park Chapter #42 Order of Eastern Star, First Presbyterian Church and she delivered Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include her husband, Lowell; a daughter Linda Marshall of Denton; a son James Grant Givens of Dallas; a stepson Jimmy Short of Wichita Falls; a stepdaughter Sue of Sapulpa, OK.; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
