Roy Gilbert McLaurin, Jr., 74, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Central Church of Christ with Dr. Victor Frazier presiding. Burial followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Wichita Falls, to the late Roy G. and Ola Hendricks McLaurin Sr. and was raised in Iowa Park. He was an iron worker working on many projects including the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi. He worked for DuPont and retired as a construction superintendent from HB Zachary in 1987. He was employed by Central Church of Christ where he was a lifelong member and served as a deacon for 18 years, and as an elder and preacher since 1989 after attending the Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock. He graduate third in his class, making his primary ministry with the Chinese Christians, teaching them the English language. In 1995, he was named “Volunteer of the Year” by the Texas Healthcare Assoc., the group’s highest award. He made many trips to deliver supplies to storm devastated areas in Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Mexico. Foreign mission work included Mexico, St. Vincent Islands, Jamaica, Canada, Poland, and Eastern European missions.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Jimmie and Donald McLaurin; and his grandson, Matthew McLaurin.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Thomas McLaurin; children, Nancy McLaurin Schmidt of Victoria, Roy W. McLaurin of Victoria, Audrey McLaurin Bell of Victoria, and Peggie McLaurin of Austin; sister, Dorothy McLaurin Johnston of Kentucky; brother, Gary McLaurin of Victoria; and thirteen grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Church of Christ to the Benevolence Fund, Christians Against Substance Abuse (CASA), Mission of Hope, or World Missions.
