Billy Joe “Sam” Baggett
1929 - 2013

Billy Joe “Sam” Baggett, 83, passed away at his residence near Iowa Park, Thursday, March 21.

Memorial services were held Monday in the chapel at Dutton Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike Rucker, Bible Baptist Church, Wichita Falls, officiating.

Sam was born July 21, 1929, in Bell County, to Francis Marion “Frank” and Jewel (Dyess) Baggett. He married Neva Joyce Paulk on Aug. 20, 1949, in Temple. He served in the Army-Air Force from April 1946 to April 1949, after which he was employed in the fence business for 30 years. Sam enjoyed deer hunting and taking an annual hunting trip with his nephew. He also enjoyed stock car racing.

He didn’t drive a race car, but took his jeep to the races every Friday and Saturday night for the past 55 years. He was inducted into the Racer’s Hall of Fame in Wichita Falls in 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marion Dean “Bubba” Baggett, Howard Baggett, Tex Baggett, Pete Baggett, and Donald Baggett; and his sisters, Vertie Ramariz, Bobbie Louise Crawford, and Edwina Welch Reagan.

Survivors include his wife, Neva Joyce; sons, Kirk and Jay Baggett; of Iowa Park; sisters, Pearl Faye Vance of Bedford, Ola Mae Rutherford of Somerset, KY., and Mary Sue Puckett of Belton; and two granddaughters.
