Lurline Smith, 78, of Electra passed away Saturday, March 28, at her residence.
Services were held Monday at First Baptist Church in Electra with Charles Nichols, pastor of Southside Baptist Church of Wichita Falls and Paul Winegeart, pastor of First Baptist Church of Electra, officiating.
Interment followed in New Electra Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born June 11, 1930, in Electra to J.L. and Oda Baird Clayton. She graduated Electra High School in 1948 and attended North Texas Teacher’s College.
She and Rodney Smith were married Sept. 15, 1950, at the First Baptist Church of Electra. She was a teacher in Houston one year and in 1968, she returned to Electra and was a teacher’s aide in the Special Education department at Dinsmore Elementary School for 17 years. After retirement, she volunteered at the Electra Public Library where she had been appointed to the board. She was also a member of the Friend’s of the Electra Public Library, who are active in planning special events and student programs at the library. She enjoyed volunteering for storytime and teaching the children to read. She was awarded the State of Texas Literacy Award in 2000 and was honored as Volunteer of the Year at Dinsmore. She was also honored by the Council of Exceptional Children West County Co-Op recognizing her dedicated service to special children. She was co-owner of DavMar Printing Company and a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Missions. She also enjoyed gardening and frequently cleaned the flower beds at the library.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Delia Patrick, Oda Clayton, and J.L. Clayton.
Survivors include her husband of Electra; a son, David of Duncan, OK.; a daughter, Martha Hutchings of Iowa Park; three grandchildren; and four grandchildren.
