Richard Wayne McIlroy

Richard Wayne McIlroy, age 80, died Sunday, April 9th 2017 at United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX. Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, April 14, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Iowa Park with Pastor Glen Pearce officiating. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 10 AM on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Eastview Memorial Park in Vernon, Texas. Services are under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park, Texas.

Richard is survived by wife, Mary, two children: Shari Gow and Scott McIlroy. He also leaves behind two grandchildren: Ashleigh Gow and Aimee Baker; four siblings: Gene McIlroy, Ray McIlroy, Kay Freeman and Sam McIlroy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful and close friends.

Richard was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals and honors, including the Bronze Star and Army Commendation. Born and raised in and around Electra, TX, the son of Claude and Mae Ethel McIlroy, and the eldest of five children. He was commissioned into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. After serving his country for 20 years, in 1978 he retired as a Major.

After retirement, Richard was an Assistant City Manager for Carson City, NV. Following his father’s death in 1983, he moved back to Texas to work for the family oil business. In 1999 he retired from the business in Iowa Park, TX and spent his latter years enjoying his hobbies and passions: traveling, fishing, gardening, rock tumbling, antiquing and spending time with family and friends.
