Lillian Janice (Dougherty) Givens, 84, passed away Monday, Sept. 6.
Services were held Wednesday, at the First Assembly of God Church in Electra with Rev. Darwin Stroud, pastor, officiating. Burial was held in Electra Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Givens was born June 26, 1926, in Quanah. Her parents were John Presley (J.P.) and Lillian Love (Hamerick) Dougherty. She attended elementary and junior high in Quanah. When she was 12-years-old the family moved to the Dougherty Community near Emory. In 1941, they moved to Electra where she attended high school. At the age of 14 she was part of a quartet, who sang gospel songs on a local radio broadcast, they met again 62 years later in Carrollton and performed their final gospel concert together. After high school she worked at Loden’s Photography Studio, Burr’s Department Store, ad Electra Steam Laundry. She and Donald Givens were married Feb. 6, 1945, in the Church of God in Electra. They attended Lee Collage in Cleveland, TN., and later retuned to Electra. She served two years as president of Electra PTA, and made a career of working with children and young people.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Harold Gene (Big Shot) Dougherty.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Valeta Don Givens of Iowa Park; a son, Dr. Lynwood Givens of Plano; a sister, Wanda Lee McClure of Electra; a brother, Johnny Ray Dougherty of Leesburg, FL.; and two grandsons.
