Velma Zelma Ashton
1921 - 2012
Velma Zelma Ashton, 91, longtime resident of Petrolia and more recently a resident of Henrietta Care Center, died Friday, Oct. 12.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 15, at First Baptist Church of Petrolia with Rev. Arron Lindsey and Hospice of Wichita Falls Chaplain, Rev. Paul DeLuca officiating. Interment will follow at Petrolia Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
A daughter of the late Minnie (Stephens) and John Lassie Leetch, Mrs. Ashton was born March 29, 1921, in Brownsboro. On Aug. 23, 1936, she and Orvel Layton Ashton were married in Athens. She worked for many years in food service for the Petrolia ISD and later for the Green Thumb Association. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Ashton was also preceded in death by her husband, Orvel Layton Ashton in 1978; grandchildren, Timothy Wayne Ashton, Donnie Lindsey and Kelli Gomila; three sisters, Lillie Jeanes, Marie Sims and Leona Sherrill.
Survivors include two daugthers, Melba Farmer of Petrolia, and Mary Whitaker of Burleson; three sons, Orvel Ashton of Burkburnett, and William Ashton and Tommy Ashton, both of Iowa Park; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
