Horace Carlton Hicks
1924 - 2008

Horace Carlton Hicks, age 84 and a 56 year Iowa Park resident, died Friday, October 31, 2008 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Iowa Park with Rev. Glen Pearce and Mr. Bob Dawson officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites was in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home.

Carlton was born October 10, 1924 in Prairie Lea, Texas to Horace Newton and Nannie Elizabeth Hicks. He and Shirley Ann Donley were married October 20, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas. He attended San Marcos, Texas schools, East Texas State University, Vernon Regional Jr. College and Midwestern University. Carlton served in the Army Air Corps during WWII serving in China-Burma India Theatre of Operations as a member of a Glider Crew. He served seven years in the military. He later worked for Pacific Route Express on the Railroad. He earned a private Pilots License and worked as a Crop Duster. He worked for Barbour Trucking Company and worked as heavy equipment operator for Wichita County. He served as Fire Marshall and Street Supt. for the City of Iowa Park. He went to Viet Nam in 1968 as a Civilian Helicopter Flight Control Instructor and Test Crew. He went to work for the Iowa Park CISD in 1970 as General Construction Instructor, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Iowa Park where he served a Past President, former member and Chief of the Iowa Park Volunteer Fire Department; Iowa Park Jaycees; Iowa Park Muleskinners; many years with the Boy Scout Troop 37 and a member of Friendly Door Senior Citizens. He was honored in 1996 as the “Senior Citizen of the Year” by the Iowa Park Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Iowa Park Masonic Lodge #713 AF&AM. Carlton was a member of First Baptist Church of Iowa Park many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Harvey, a sister, Hazel and his wife, Shirley.

Carlton is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Diane and Richard and Kathy of Iowa Park; a daughter and son-in-law, Alisa and Chuck Devenport of Lindale, Texas; four brothers, Edman and Robert of San Antonio, Texas, Will of Clearfield, Utah, Arthur of Godley, Texas; three sisters, Maurine Nixon of Sherman, Texas, Bernice Schupp of Charlotte, Texas and Beatrice Miller of Jourdanton, Texas and six grandchildren, Dustin, Jered and Jeremy Hicks, Lauren, Ross and Nolan Devenport.

Visitation was held on Monday, November 3, 2008 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Dutton Funeral Home.
