The number of active COVID-19 cases in Wichita County has more than tripled in the last week according to the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District.

Since last Wednesday 110 new active cases of the novel Coronavirus were reported in Wichita County, with five of those identified as residents of Iowa Park. This brings the total number of cases in the county since March 18 to 230, with 79 of those patients recovered.

Included in those numbers are an employee and a patient at Texhoma Christian Care Center, and three employees at Red River Hospital.

With the numbers of infections increasing, so are hospitalizations.

Eight of those testing positive in the past week are now hospitalized, the first time a Covid victim has been hospitalized in Wichita County since May 7. The remaining 141 active cases are recovering at home.

Lou Kreidler, Director of Health for the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District strongly recommended workers and customers wear masks in order to slow down the increase in cases, many of which are community spread. “I don’t see us having a decrease in cases in the foreseeable future,” Kreidler said in an interview Tuesday.

She continued, “My hope is that people will see an increase in the number of cases, and begin to think about their risks. Social distancing, wearing a mask and washing your ing your hands are the three most important things people can do to prevent the spread of Covid.”

Wichita County Judge Woody Gossum echoed Kreidler’s concerns, saying, “There is no doubt masking is an important thing and we want to see it.” When asked if Wichita County opened too soon, Gossum replied, “We should have opened but masking should have been part of it.”

Judge Gossum released the following statement Tuesday:

“In a conference call yesterday, a well-known medical person stressed three key COVID prevention practices:

Hand Sanitizing

Masking

Social Distancing

Each of us can do these things personally for our own safety and that of others. Masking is not an unusual practice. We all expect it in surgery. Another local physician said he masked to protect his patient – much as what we are asking.

Retailers are key in the sanitizing of the facility both actively and with sanitizer for customers. Masking by employees sets the stage for customers to follow. Last but very important is social distancing for all.

As county judge, I am reluctant to sign a “masking order” that has very ambiguous enforcement provisions under the Governor’s latest statement. Second, I do not want to place business owners and law enforcement in precarious positions.

Local governments may be able to pass more definitive orders to help bolster masking and public safety. I encourage them to do so with extreme efforts to anticipate the many situations that will not fit the order and cause considerable confusion for the public.

We are appealing to the public to take personal responsibility and reduce this problem.”

Iowa Park Mayor Ray Shultz said, “Wash your hands, don’t touch your face.

If you feel uncomfortable going into public without a mask, wear a mask. Make sure you are social distancing. If we follow what we need to do with social distancing, washing our hands, we can get this under control and get those numbers back down.”

So far in Wichita County, a total of 8,697 residents have been tested with 7,698 of the results coming back negative. As of Wednesday morning, 769 tests were still pending.

As a reminder, the definitions of the types of cases are as follows:

Contact to a previous case: The exposure occurred directly from another positive case.

Close contact to a previous case: The exposure occurred directly from another positive household case.

Community spread: The exposure is unknown.

Of the most recent cases that have been fully investigated, the public health district lists ten of those as travel related, 52 by contact; and 37 as community spread cases. Ten are still under investigation.
