Joe Gowdy Slack

Joe Gowdy Slack went home to Heaven peacefully from his earthly home on Thursday, January 2, 2020.

Gowdy was born in Plainview, Texas on November 20, 1941 to Joe and Margaret Ellen Gowdy Slack. He graduated from Archer City High School in 1960 and was drafted into the army where he served in active Reserves. He then attended Arlington State College and graduated with an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering as an electrician. He worked for TX Electric for several years before moving to Montana to pursue his passion of ranching. working as a foreman on a cattle ranch in Montana. After returning to Texas he worked until his retirement in Civil Service at Sheppard AFB. He then made ranching his fulltime and favorite job.

His favorite pastimes were raising and training horses, raising cattle, dancing to country and western music, watching his kids and grandkids play sports and cheer. But above all, Gowdy loved spending time with his family, friends, and his dogs.

Gowdy is survived by his wife, Jeanette, his favorite dance partner, his son Joe Gowdy Slack Jr., daughter Shea Chambers, and youngest son, Tom Garrett Slack. Grandsons Chase, Colby, Cooper Chambers, and Seth Slack. Two granddaughters, Meagon Turner and Jenna Williams plus two great grandsons, Ryker Lemons and Rhett Williams. Two sisters, Ceil Cleveland and Mary Webb. He’s also survived by his Mother-in-law Jo-Anne Garrett and Father-in-law James Garrett; daughter-in-law, Stacy Slack and brother-in-law, Jerry Footlick plus several nieces and nephews, cousins, and one aunt.

Honorary Pallbearers are his grandsons and close friends, Bear Waters, Monty Choate, Rod Odorico, Don Craig, and Len Garland.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 6, 2020 at 2:00PM at United Methodist Church in Iowa Park, Texas. Officiating is Clifton McFadden.
