Travis Neal Hines

     Travis Neal Hines passed away on January 18, 2021. Travis was born in Iowa Park, TX, on June 15, 1934 to Miles Lewis and Cleo George Hines. During his teen years, they moved to Lubbock, TX. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1955. He married Judith (Judy) Mitchell while still at Texas Tech. Upon graduation, while working on a Masters degree, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was accepted to Officer Candidate School. They moved to Bethesda, MD for training where his daughter, Cynthia Jo, was born that same year. He graduated and was transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA, where John Mitchell was born in 1957. The family moved to Houston, TX, where Travis continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was promoted through the ranks to Colonel, serving the Marine Corps for 24 years.

     Travis completed a degree at South Texas College of Law, practicing civil law in Houston, then in Conroe, and finally in Trinity, TX where he settled. He married Jeanette (Jan) Davis, becoming stepfather to Sherry and Randy. He and Jan were active members of the Dorcas Wills Baptist Church in Trinity for many years. After retiring from legal practice at the age of 70, he enjoyed time with his dog JJ, reading Tom Clancy novels and watching old western movies.

     Travis is survived by his 3 cousins Elga Ann Denny and James Owens of Iowa Park, and Jimmy Joy George Parmer of Vernon, TX and his children Jo Corbin, John Hines, Randy and Lurie R. Coward and Sherry Coward. Grandchildren include Rachel Corbin, Jessica Williams, Rebecca Williams, Marissa Hines, Nolan Coward, Cassie Tuminello and Lurie Lynn Coward, along with 7 great grandchildren.

     Arrangements are being made through Waller-Thornton Funeral Home, Trinity, TX. A service will be held at Dorcas Wills Memorial Baptist Church, Trinity, TX, on February 2nd at 10:00am and will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend. He will be interred with military honors alongside Jan in the Houston National Cemetery.
