To celebrate its 25th anniversary, also known as the silver jubilee, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) presents “A Material Inheritance” (A Material Inheritance), a group exhibition that examines silver both as a material and as a metaphor. It will be on view from September 5 of this year until January 30, 2027.
As the planet’s most reflective element, silver has transformed the way humans perceive, record, and understand the world. It is the material through which cultures have learned to see themselves and to remember themselves.
Its exceptional optical and metallurgical properties made possible advances in mirror manufacturing, photography, and scientific instrumentation, while its weight, density, and malleability solidified it as a privileged medium for coin minting, the creation of ceremonial objects and jewelry, and the crafting of cherished family relics.
Beyond its status as a precious metal, the exhibition analyzes how silver has shaped systems of knowledge, value and cultural exchange across centuries and continents.
Presented to mark this emblematic anniversary of the HCCC, the exhibition uses silver both as a central theme and as a prism, inviting reflection on the institution’s past and consideration of the future evolution of contemporary craft.
This show features works ranging from traditional metalworking and jewelry to experimental practices with glass, ceramics, and kinetic media, revealing the extraordinary conceptual and material reach of silver.
In these works, silver manifests itself both as substance and witness: a material shaped by histories of extraction, trade, migration, labor, and devotion, yet continually transformed thanks to artistic experimentation.
The exhibition places silver as an active cultural agent that not only preserves stories but also refracts and continually reimagines them.
