Houston Press Edition 1287: Domestic Violence, Health, and Community

October Focuses on Domestic Violence and Help Resources in Houston

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the Houston area there are organizations that offer guidance and support to victims, including the Houston Area Women’s Center and Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse.

The figures published in this edition also reveal the scale of the problem. More than one in three women and almost one in six men in the United States experience physical violence, sexual violence, or harassment by an intimate partner at some point in their lives.

In Houston and Harris County, approximately 30% of local homicides are related to family or intimate partner violence, according to local authorities.

Those who need support can also consult the Spanish-language resources of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, available 24 hours a day.

YES Prep Seeks Applicants for the 2027-2028 School Year

YES Prep Public Schools opened its application period for the 2027-2028 school year on October 1.

The system serves more than 21,000 students across 27 campuses in the Houston area. The deadline to participate in the regular process will be February 12, 2027 and the random lottery is scheduled for February 22.

Families submitting an application after the deadline will be placed on a waiting list and may receive a seat if a vacancy opens.

Houston Maintains Influenza Vaccination Options for Uninsured People

The Houston Health Department offers influenza vaccines to uninsured patients or those with insufficient coverage through a sliding scale.

Texas Vaccines for Children also includes the influenza vaccine for children who meet the program’s requirements, while Harris County Public Health maintains fixed clinics and mobile units with varying availability.

The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccination for most people aged 6 months or older who do not have a medical contraindication. For those who need a single dose during the season, September and October are the preferred months to receive it.

The activity helped bring the newspaper closer to readers in Katy, Fulshear and other communities in the western part of the metro area, in addition to presenting the column “Spreading Love for Houston.”

Halloween Will Feature Activities Adapted for Children with Sensory Sensitivity

Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center prepared Halloween activities for autistic children, those with sensory differences and other learning needs.

The sessions will include lower crowds, dimmed lighting and sound, calm spaces, science activities, crafts, stories and candy hunts.

Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center will hold its session on October 12, while the Children’s Museum Houston will host adapted activities on October 19.

Joe Espada Faces Uncertainty About His Future with the Astros

The Houston Astros entered the off-season with doubts about the future of manager Joe Espada after being eliminated from the postseason.

Espada posted a 256-229 record in the regular season over three seasons and won two American League West titles, although he did not secure postseason victories during that period.

The team will also have to define its sporting structure after the departure of General Manager Dana Brown.
