Amazon to Hire Over 6,000 Workers in the Houston Area for Christmas

Temporary jobs have an announced average wage of $20 per hour. The vacancies will be posted weekly through December, and some may become permanent positions.

Amazon plans to hire more than 6,000 workers in the Houston metropolitan area during the 2026 holiday season. The opportunities will include temporary, part-time, and full-time roles at storage, distribution, and order fulfillment facilities. The company will publish new openings weekly through December.

Hiring is part of a plan announced on October 20 to hire more than 300,000 employees in the United States, approximately 26,500 of them in Texas. The figure for Houston includes facilities in the metro area, not only establishments within city limits.

Amazon announced an average wage of $20 per hour for seasonal employees. The amount corresponds to the national average for this category, so the pay for each position will depend on location, shift, and the conditions of the vacancy.

Amazon will offer jobs in Houston warehouses and distribution centers

The planned hires for Greater Houston will be distributed among order fulfillment centers (fulfillment centers), sorting facilities, delivery stations and other logistics operations.

These facilities participate in different stages of order processing: receiving and storing merchandise, preparing packages, sorting, and shipping to distribution routes.

The hiring plan includes temporary positions to handle the year-end activity surge, in addition to part-time and full-time opportunities. The availability of each modality will depend on the facilities that are hiring.

Amazon plans to post vacancies progressively between October and December. The most sought-after roles may be filled quickly, so the 6,000 hires announced for Houston do not equal 6,000 positions available simultaneously on the job portal.

The average pay for temporary workers will be $20 per hour

Amazon established different salary benchmarks for its operations in the United States:

  • Temporary positions: announced average wage of $20 per hour.
  • Regular full-time positions in operations: starting minimum wage of $20 per hour.
  • Average hourly pay in operations: about $24, according to the company.

Amazon also calculates that the total average compensation for its regular full-time employees exceeds $32 per hour when including the value of benefits. That figure does not represent money received in salary alone, nor does it automatically apply to temporary workers.

Individual offers will set the corresponding pay, shift, location, hours, and terms of employment.

Amazon will expand health insurance for temporary employees in January

Effective January 1, 2027, Amazon will expand access to health coverage for eligible temporary employees who work at least 30 hours per week.

Employees who already hold eligible temporary positions before that date may access the benefit starting January 1. For new employees hired on or after that day, coverage will be available from the start of their employment, provided they meet the program’s conditions.

Amazon announced health insurance options with premiums from $5 per week and copays from $5. The cost and features will depend on the plan available to each eligible employee.

Therefore, the expansion does not mean that all temporary workers hired in October, November, or December will immediately receive the new health coverage.

Other job benefits also vary depending on the role, the number of scheduled hours, and the eligibility requirements.

Job applications are made through Amazon’s official portal

The Amazon recruitment portal concentrates hourly job opportunities in warehouses and other operational facilities. The search allows identifying vacancies by location and reviewing the terms of each position.

The company has also enabled Amazon Local Jobs to locate opportunities and sign up to receive notices of new hires.

The process for hourly operations roles generally includes:

  1. Selecting an available vacancy, with its location and schedule.
  2. Completing the online application and, where applicable, choosing a shift.
  3. Scheduling a hiring appointment to complete pre-employment requirements.
  4. Presenting the necessary documentation to verify identity and authorization to work in the United States.
  5. Completing the background checks and onboarding activities applicable to the position.

According to Amazon, most hourly operations jobs do not require a resume or traditional interview. However, some roles have different requirements and may include assessments or interviews.

Selection processes may also be subject to background checks and other requirements applicable to the vacancy.

Amazon job alerts will be sent through December

Amazon has enabled a text-alert service by sending the word NEWJOB to the number 31432. The system asks for a ZIP code to identify available opportunities in the corresponding area.

Notices depend on there being vacancies that match the registered location. The absence of a notice does not mean the company has canceled its overall hiring plan.

Some workers hired for the holiday season may later transition to regular full-time positions. The possibility will depend on operational needs and Amazon’s selection process; it does not constitute a guaranteed permanent job offer.

Vacancies will continue to be posted weekly during October, November and December 2026, in accordance with the company’s announced hiring calendar.
