Lavacca Moore Johnson, or Sam as her friends and family knew her best, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.  She was born on October 13, 1938 to William and Kathleen Moore in Wichita Falls, Texas.  Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 6 PM on Friday, July 1, 2022 at Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park, Texas.  Services will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, July 2, 2022 in the pavilion at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park.

As a young lady, Sam was active in Wichita Theta Rho Girls Club #49.  She took art lessons from her grandmother who had a master’s degree in art, and was quite the artist, painting many serene landscapes, Sam won an essay contest and was awarded a trip to New York.  She also attended the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962.

After graduating from Wichita Falls High School in 1957, she later attended Midwestern State University. Sam had several jobs working at White’s, Texas Bank and Trust, and Town and Country Mobile Homes before going into education.  She was with the West Wichita County Co-op for 10 years and Region IX Education Service Center for 30 years when she finally retired in 2017.

Sam married the love of her life, Darrell R. Johnson, on January 24, 1969, and were married for 53 years.  She read her bible every day and would get up one hour early to read it before she went to work. Sam was a devoted Baptist. She was a phenomenal cook and could make anything from scratch. She is best known for her strawberry pretzel delight and banana pudding!

Sam had many roles over the course of her life, but Grandma was her favorite. She attended every one of her granddaughters’ school functions and was present for many of their sporting events. The grandchildren remember there was always orange Gatorade in the refrigerator and Kix cereal with sugar was their breakfast.  Her family was her top priority, and she was always there to help and guide them throughout their lives.

Sam was well known for her class and gentle nature.  She looked immaculate every day, and always dressed in style and sophistication. No one could wear a pantsuit like Sam could.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Kathleen Moore, and sisters, Sarah Macpherson and Judy North. She is survived by her husband, Darrell Johnson of Kamay; daughter, Tracy and Steve Otto of Wichita Falls; son Darell Johnson of Iowa Park; and son, Lewis and Sylvia Johnson of Iowa Park. She also leaves behind her granddaughters, Mary Michelle Otto and Greg Parkman; Emily and Travis Veitenheimer; and Hayli Otto as well as great grandchildren, Addison, Caden, and Bennett Veitenheimer.  Other survivors include sister-in-law, Patricia Taylor; brother-in-law, David Keller; and nieces and nephew.
