The Houston Rodeo has used a slogan that reads “Built on Tradition,” because for more than ninety years it has promoted its cultural impact and its agricultural roots. Becoming the world’s largest livestock show, a top-tier event in Texas that celebrates Western heritage, education, and entertainment.
Much of what this institution promotes is also what the singer Pepe Aguilar has promoted throughout his career, as well as his family, dedicating themselves to promoting Mexican culture, music, and the charro tradition. Values that he himself compares with those of the Houston Rodeo.
The conversation with Aguilar was precisely to discuss his performance within the framework of Go Tejano Day at the Houston Rodeo. This year was chosen to perform on that iconic stage on a day dedicated to Hispanics.
“Go Tejano Day is a day that speaks of the traditions of this particular state and I don’t feel alien to it, because I was born in San Antonio, I grew up in Zacatecas, I am ‘Zacatexan’. Texas and Mexico have a brotherhood dating back hundreds of years. Even before Texas was part of the United States, it was part of Mexican territory and many people stayed in the state and we are brothers; definitely and respectfully I will carry the Mexican side of my blood and show the charro, the mariachi, the band, the colorful, and we’re going to pull out all the stops so that everyone who comes out happy.”
It will be on March 15 when the performer of “For Women Like You” arrives on the stage that has seen regional and Tejano music stars pass through for decades, including Selena, Ramon Ayala, Los Tigres del Norte, Emilio Navaira and, recently, Grupo Frontera and Carin León, to name a few. Not to mention legends such as Elvis Presley and George Strait.
Pepe says he has worked on preparing this show and promises to give his best without competing with anyone.
“First God, may everything go according to plan, as I have it, so that people see what our concept is. I won’t compare myself to anyone else, not even to those monsters of music; I don’t measure up to them, but yes, definitely, everyone has their own essence and what they offer; I offer my 35 years of experience and my concept of charro and music.”
