Tax Return Recommendations

Each year, beginning in January, the tax filing season, commonly known as “the taxes,” begins. This year the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began receiving tax returns on January 26, and the deadline to file your return is April 15.

The 2025 tax year is filed, and taxpayers may see some changes when filling out their respective forms. Among these, this year several new provisions of the Big and Beautiful Project Act take effect that could affect tax credits and deductions.

The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual tax returns, and it is anticipated that the majority of taxpayers will file them electronically. This method is the federal agency’s recommended approach in order to speed up the review process and to be able to issue refunds to those who qualify.

Taxpayers can review and use various online tools and resources offered on the IRS website.

“The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is ready to help taxpayers meet their tax filing and payment obligations,” said Frank Bisignano, the IRS’s chief executive.

“As always, IRS staff remain vigilant and committed to their mission of serving American taxpayers. At the same time, the IRS information systems have been updated to incorporate the new tax laws and are ready to process filings efficiently and effectively during the tax filing season,” he added.

IRS Recommendations to Taxpayers:

IRS Online Individual Account: Taxpayers can access their information through an online individual account, including balance owed, payments made or scheduled, tax documents, and more.

New Schedule 1-A: Taxpayers can use the new Schedule 1-A to claim the recently enacted tax deductions, such as those related to no taxes on tips, no taxes on interest from auto loans, and/or the increased deduction for seniors.

Open a Trump Account: Parents, guardians, and other authorized individuals can establish a new individual retirement account for their children. Visit trumpaccounts.gov for more information.

Open a Bank Account: The IRS urges taxpayers to establish a bank account to receive their tax refunds via direct deposit, as the IRS is gradually phasing out the use of tax refund checks under the executive order to modernize payments from one bank account to another.

Where is my refund?: The information on refund status is generally available about 24 hours after electronically filing a current year’s return, or four weeks after filing a paper return.

Be alert to tax scams and fraud: Taxpayers can learn how to prevent, report and recover from tax scams and tax-related identity theft at IRS.gov.
