This February, the Children’s Museum of Houston and the Fort Bend Discovery Center invite you to celebrate Black History Month with a program of activities that includes powerful presentations, interactive activities, and moving storytelling that honor the history, culture, creativity, and strength of the African American community: of the past, of the present, and of the future.
From ancient African traditions to today’s pioneers, we invite you to learn, participate, create, and be inspired. Explore African American history through theater, music, dance, crafts, and stories that spark curiosity and foster kindness, empathy, and confidence.
Each Thursday at the Houston Children’s Museum in the evening, live performances and interactive activities celebrate African American culture, history and creativity:
- February 12, 2026: The Joy of the Djembe Drum: Experience the rhythms of West African percussion that celebrate unity and healing.
- February 19, 2026: African Dance Workshop led by the Kucheza Ngoma Dance Company: a fusion of traditional and contemporary African dance.
- February 26, 2026: African and Spiritual Rhythms: Explore songs of resilience and coded messages of freedom.
Every Saturday, families are invited to take part in special storytelling sessions for Black History Month, led by renowned ABC13 journalists, who will share stories that celebrate African American history, culture, courage and community, bringing to life moving narratives through the voices that families see on television every day.
These readings, led by special guests, connect storytelling with representation, literacy and inspiration, showing young people that history is built by real people and that their stories matter.

Celebrations at the Fort Bend Discovery Center
All Saturdays in February there are Black History Month storytime sessions at the Fort Bend Discovery Center, where community leaders become storytellers and powerful stories inspire meaningful conversations. These special sessions celebrate the history, heritage, and valuable contributions of the African American community through read-alouds that foster curiosity, empathy, and pride in children.
