Houston Public Pools: Locations, Free Admission, and Season Dates

Houston’s Municipal Pools Ended Their 2026 Summer Season. Recreational Access is Free, but the Locations and Schedules That Will Operate in 2027 Are Not Yet Confirmed.

Updated October 20, 2026.

Houston’s public pools offer free access during the summer season, but they do not stay open year-round. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) confirmed that the 2026 municipal season has ended and that its recreational pools are closed.

Normally the city runs its pools from Memorial Day, in late May, to Labor Day, in early September. However, not all facilities open at the same time nor do they necessarily keep the same hours. Availability depends on the annual calendar, lifeguard staffing, and the conditions of each pool.

For 2027 there is not yet a confirmed list of open pools or operating hours. Previous calendars serve as a reference to identify municipal facilities, but they do not guarantee that a pool will reopen next summer.

The Houston Public Pool Season Ended on September 7, 2026

The recreational season of municipal pools ended on Monday, September 7, 2026, when Labor Day was observed.

HPARD states that its annual season normally runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. During those months, the department publishes calendars that identify which facilities are open, their operating days, and the hours of entry.

Availability can change during a season. In 2026, the city opened some facilities initially on weekends and later expanded the schedule as staff were hired.

There were also later changes. The August 4 municipal list identified 22 pools available for the late-summer period, operating mainly on weekends.

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s pool schedule confirms that the 2026 season has ended. The opening and hours for 2027 should be verified when the city publishes the next calendar.

Access to Municipal Pools Is Free

The recreational pools managed by HPARD offer free public access during the periods they are open.

This municipal service should not be confused with private water parks, sports clubs, or recreational centers in other metropolitan area cities, which may have their own fees and rules.

Hours and available facilities vary during the season. Although municipal pools do not charge general admission, the city may establish access controls, capacity limits, and safety rules for visitors.

Houston Public Pools: Locations and Phone Numbers

Houston has municipal water facilities distributed across different parts of the city. The following list includes pools that appeared in the official operation calendar of August 4, 2026, along with their addresses and phone numbers recorded by HPARD.

These locations are not currently open for recreational swimming. Their inclusion does not guarantee that they will operate during the summer of 2027.

The August 2026 municipal pool list helps identify other facilities included in that year’s calendar.

The addresses help locate the aquatic centers, but availability must be confirmed separately. Some pools remained closed for part of the summer and others had changes to their operating days.

Schedules Changed During the Summer of 2026

The 2026 municipal calendar began with a first phase of limited openings on weekends. During that stage, some pools operated Saturdays from 1 to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.

The city later expanded its programming. Beginning June 16, the published hours for the facilities in the second phase were Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 7 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m., with Mondays closed.

As the season approached its end, the calendar again concentrated mainly on Saturdays and Sundays. Holidays had special hours.

These hours apply to 2026 and should not be used to plan visits in 2027. The next calendar will determine which pools will be available and when they will open.

Children Under 10 Must Stay Within Reach of an Adult

HPARD sets safety rules for the city’s aquatic facilities. Children under 10 must remain within arm’s reach of a responsible adult while in the water.

The department also notes that children should not swim alone and that life jackets must be US Coast Guard-approved and sized to fit the wearer’s weight and height.

Safety rules include the following restrictions and recommendations:

  • No running around the pools.
  • No diving in areas with less than 13 feet of depth.
  • No rough play that could endanger other users.
  • Respect instructions from staff and lifeguards.
  • Use sun protection and stay hydrated.

The rules for Houston’s pools establish the conditions of use and the authorities of the staff responsible for safety.

The presence of lifeguards does not replace the supervision by the responsible adults of young children.

Swimming Lessons Depend on the Municipal Schedule

Aquatic programs do not necessarily have the same availability as recreational swimming.

During the summer of 2026, HPARD offered free in-water fitness classes for adults from June 16 to August 7. Some sites hosted aqua fitness sessions, Aqua Zumba, and Silver Splash.

These activities had limited slots and required registration. The dates and sites corresponded exclusively to the 2026 program.

Regarding learn-to-swim classes, the department reported that it did not have a contracted provider to teach them and was in talks with a possible organization.

Therefore, there is no confirmed schedule of municipal swimming classes for 2027. Availability will need to be established through a new call or official calendar.

Houston Will Publish 2027 Openings Before the Next Season

HPARD maintains its pool calendar, rules, and aquatic programs in the municipal swimming section.

The department also said that its lifeguard hiring for the next season will begin again in January 2027. The number of pools that can open will depend on scheduling and available resources.

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s main office can be reached at 832-394-8805. Information on facilities and activities is also available at Houston Parks and Recreation.
