The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation announced its “Click It or Ticket” campaign, urging Americans to buckle up before Memorial Day and the summer travel season.
From May 11 through May 31, state and local law enforcement will intensify patrols to ensure that all passengers and drivers wear seat belts on roads nationwide.
In 2024, the failure to use a seat belt was the cause of a death in passenger vehicles every 54 minutes.
“Buckling up only takes a second, and that second could mean the difference between life and death in a crash,” said Jonathan Morrison, administrator of the NHTSA. “We are joining law enforcement across the country to remind everyone: ‘Buckle up or pay a ticket.’ Enforcing state and local seat belt laws will save countless lives,” he added.
