Nonprofit organizations and immigrant-rights advocates, leaders of unions such as SEIU, religious representatives, and public officials, have called for a march to be held this Saturday, July 25, to demand the abolition of the Department of Immigration and Border Security, known as ICE, by its English acronym.
They will also be calling for justice for the three migrants who died this July as a result of ICE operations.
“The march is for Lorenzo,” says the press release, in clear reference to the death of Mexican migrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who died in early July after being shot by an ICE agent in a raid where Salgado Araujo was not the target. Additionally, it is for the death of Juan Jairo Durán in Florida, originally from Mexico, and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, 26 years old, a young father from Colombia, who also died this month when an ICE agent shot him while searching for another undocumented person in a raid in the state of Maine.
“ICE, Out of Texas” is the slogan of the organizers of the movement that will begin at 10:00 a.m. from 1121 Franklin Street, Houston, Texas 77002.
In a press release, the organizers believe that ICE is terrorizing immigrant families, mostly undocumented ones who live and go to work with the fear of not returning home, whether due to detention, deportation or death in immigration operations.
