Timbiriche: History and Controversies

Macarena García and Iker Sánchez explain how they prepared to portray Sasha Sokol and Diego Schoening in ViX’s Timbiriche series, which also tackles the group’s controversies.

The series Timbiriche has sparked interest and controversy since its premiere on ViX. On October 30, the two final episodes of the season arrive, while those who have not yet started watching can catch up with the previous episodes.

In an interview with Macarena García, who plays Sasha Sokol, and Iker Sánchez, who brings Diego Schoening to life, we learned details about the production, the actors’ preparation, and the challenges of portraying characters who are part of the history of Mexican pop music.

The Challenge of Portraying Timbiriche Members

For Macarena García, taking on the role of Sasha Sokol meant an important responsibility from the start.

“Honestly, from the beginning I took it as a challenge. It was going to mean a lot of responsibility in my life to do a very good job, and to do it with a lot of respect, with a lot of admiration, with a lot of love, and that’s how I approached it at all times. I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity. I enjoyed it a lot, its challenges and its incredible aspects,” Macarena shared.

The series, a fiction inspired by real events, presents Timbiriche’s rise as a musical phenomenon capable of filling venues, generating euphoria among its fans, and turning a group of teenagers into idols for millions of people.

On stage they represented the dream of an entire generation. Behind the spotlights, the story addresses the friendships, ambitions, pressures, and decisions that accompanied the members’ growth.

Months of Preparation, Rehearsals, and Acting Lessons

Portraying the group’s members required preparation that included singing, acting, and studying different stages of their lives.

“We had to sing, we had to do everything. Portraying a character over about ten years, give or take, and that’s a lot. We had rehearsals, classes, many acting workshops, the whole group together, and it was super beautiful, very fun. I think it’s incredibly enriching and a huge opportunity for any actor,” the actress said.

For his part, Iker Sánchez recalled that the work began several months before filming.

“We were pulling each other’s hair in rehearsals for three months here in Mexico City, before we went to Uruguay. It was an amazing experience to start connecting with each other and also to begin exploring the characters’ bodily presence, studying them and more.”

The Story of Sasha Sokol and Luis de Llano in the Timbiriche Series

In addition to depicting Timbiriche’s success, the production addresses one of the group’s most delicate episodes: the sexual abuse that Sasha Sokol alleged she suffered from Luis de Llano, the producer linked to the group’s creation, when she was 14 and he 39.

The singer pursued legal action against De Llano. In 2025, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation confirmed a civil ruling that includes compensation and the obligation to issue a public apology. Noncompliance with the ordered measures led to the producer’s temporary arrest in September 2026.

While portraying Sasha during that period, Macarena García noted that the team took on the responsibility of addressing the story with respect and care.

“I believe we all understood the responsibility we had in handling a story like this; we took it on and something was done about it. At the end of each episode you will be able to see a disclaimer that provides support and help to people who are experiencing a similar situation,” she said.

The actress also highlighted the possibility that an interpretation could contribute to generating conversations about difficult experiences and help others.

“As an actress I will always strive to portray characters that open a conversation allowing dialogue about what is happening, about what happened, and then prevent a similar case from happening or help someone who lived a similar story. It has to be done the right way and feel like it will provoke and generate something positive in the world,” she added.

Original Timbiriche Members Distance Themselves from the Series

The production has also sparked controversy off-screen. Before the premiere, Alix Bauer, Diego Schoening, Mariana Garza, Erik Rubín, Benny Ibarra, and Sasha Sokol released a joint statement to clarify that they did not participate in the creation of the series nor were they consulted about the stories depicted.

The artists also noted that they did not authorize the use of their image, voice, or identity and warned that the fiction could combine real events with situations that did not occur.

The stance of Timbiriche’s members contrasts with the interest sparked by the production, which presents a dramatized interpretation of one of the most recognized groups in Mexican pop.

The Timbiriche series can be watched on ViX.
