Various cultural institutions have announced their plans for the latter half of this year and the early part of the next, among them the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC), which announced its new generation of resident artists for the 2026-2027 period: a group of 10 notable artists, both local and national, who work in diverse artisanal disciplines.
And for 25 years now, the center’s artist residency program has offered time and space for craft artists to focus on their creative work and interact with the public.
This program supports emerging, mid-career, and established artists who work across all artisanal disciplines, including ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and mixed media.
As a requirement for joining this program, the HCCC requires residents to keep their studios open at least two days a week, giving visitors a unique opportunity to come in, ask questions, and observe the creation process.
This deeper level of interaction allows the public to learn about various craft processes and techniques, while helping artists gain visibility, network within the Houston community, and educate people of all ages about the art of craft.

At the same time, for several years now, the HCCC has collaborated with the Houston Center for Photography (HCP) on a joint, interdisciplinary artist residency.
This residency, designed for artists whose works sit at the intersection of contemporary craft and photography, supports creators with an experimental, multidisciplinary approach that explores the boundaries of both fields.
The resident artists of the ICP have a studio at HCCC and receive all the benefits of regular resident artists, in addition to printing credits and access to HCP’s digital laboratory.
The artist selection, made by a jury, is based on the quality of the creative work, the ability to interact with the public, professional background, and the diversity of the program. In addition to 24-hour studio access, seven days a week, the HCCC provides the artists with a monthly stipend, various professional development opportunities, and a group exhibition at the end of the residency cycle.
