Enrollment available through Harris County Public Library is targeted at children from birth to age 3. Once accepted into the program, they receive a book each month until they turn 5.
All eligible children within a family can participate. A child enrolled from birth could receive up to 60 books before turning five.

Living in Houston or Harris County does not by itself guarantee that a home is within an active program area. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library operates through local organizations that fund the books and cover defined geographic areas.

When coverage exists, the system shows the corresponding local program. If there is no program available yet for that ZIP code, it also allows providing contact information to receive a notification when service reaches the area.

Harris County Public Library allows starting the registration at any of its participating branches. Staff can help complete the enrollment and verify whether the child’s address lies within an eligible area.

During registration it is important to provide correctly the child’s full name and mailing address, as the books are mailed directly to the registered address.
The first book may take two to three months to arrive
The arrival of the first copy is not immediate. Harris County Public Library estimates a period of two to three months after enrollment.
After the first shipment, the child receives a new book each month until turning 5, as long as they remain enrolled and postal information is up to date.
Titles are age-appropriate and are published by Penguin Random House for the program.
Families can choose bilingual books in English and Spanish
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library offers a bilingual option in English and Spanish for families enrolled in the United States.
In Greater Houston, families can select a fully bilingual collection, with titles designed so the same book can be shared in both languages.
The bilingual option is not a separate program nor does it carry any additional cost to the family.
The books arrive by mail and do not need to be returned
Unlike a library loan, Imagination Library copies become part of the child’s personal library. Each shipment is addressed to the child and can be kept permanently.
The titles change as the child grows. The program selects books for different early development stages and maintains different collections according to age group.
The address must be kept up to date to continue receiving the books
Because the copies come directly by mail, a change of address can interrupt deliveries if the address is not updated within the program.
