King Charles III on His Visit to the United States

In a historic moment, King Charles III and Queen Camilla are undertaking their first State Visit to the United States, visiting Washington, D.C., the city of New York, and Virginia. The British monarch was welcomed at the White House by Donald Trump, although the visit takes place at a moment of tension due to frictions between the United Kingdom and the United States stemming from the war in Iran.

Trump and King Charles exchanged gifts, according to the White House. Trump gifted Charles a copy of an 1785 letter written by John Adams to John Jay. In the letter, Adams describes having been received by King George III in his capacity as the first ambassador of the United States to Great Britain. Charles presented Trump with a framed copy of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute desk.

Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump presented Queen Camilla with sterling silver spoons from Tiffany & Co., as well as White House honey. Queen Camilla gifted Melania Trump a brooch by British designer Fiona Rae.

Moreover, King Charles delivered a joint address before Congress, a key moment of his four-day State Visit. The last figure of the British royal family to address a joint session of Congress was his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1991.
