Sensory Activities for Kids in Houston and Sugar Land: Dates and Registration

Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center Will Host Sensory Friendly Days on October 12 and 19 with Halloween Activities, Reduced Noise and Lighting, Quiet Spaces, and Mandatory Pre-Registration

Two museums in the Houston area will host Halloween-style days adapted for children with autism, sensory differences, and other learning differences during October.

The Sensory Friendly Days will take place on Monday October 12 at Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, in Sugar Land, and on Monday October 19 at Children’s Museum Houston.

Both events are designed with lower attendance, reduced lighting and sound, additional visual signage, and quiet spaces where children can take a break.

Pre-registration is mandatory for both days.

  • October 12: Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; general admission $8 and free for members.
  • October 19: Children’s Museum Houston, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; $9.95 per person.

October 12: Fort Bend Will Have Halloween Sensory Activities in Sugar Land

Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center will hold its Sensory Friendly Day on Monday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 198 Kempner St., Sugar Land, TX 77498.

General admission is $8 and free for members. The Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center event requires pre-registration.

The day will have fewer visitors than on a regular day, reduced lighting and sound, additional visual signage, and quiet rooms.

Cookie Monster, Bubbles, and Trick-or-Treating Are Part of the Program

The schedule for October 12 includes:

  • Cookie Monster-inspired meet: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kidtropolis Town Central.
  • Texas Bubblers: bubble experiments from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Science Station.
  • Trick-or-treating: throughout the day in various areas of the center.
  • Monster Stuffies: craft and language activity from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Art Academy.
  • Storytime: The Color Monster: 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
  • Faithful Paws: therapy dogs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Arc of Fort Bend and Easter Seals Greater Houston will also be present from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with resources for families.

October 19: Children’s Museum Houston Opens for Sensory Friendly Day

Children’s Museum Houston will host its day on Monday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1500 Binz St., Houston, TX 77004.

Admission is $9.95 per person and the Children’s Museum Houston Sensory Friendly Day requires pre-registration.

The Sensory Friendly Days are held on selected Mondays, when the museum is normally closed to the general public, to reduce the number of visitors and better manage stimuli inside the galleries.

Houston Ballet Will Offer Adapted Dance Sessions

Houston Ballet will participate from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with information about its adapted programs and two brief movement sessions at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in Brown Auditorium.

Faithful Paws will bring therapy dogs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m..

There will also be Halloween activities and sensory experiences during the day:

  • Texas Bubblers: bubble science from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Trick-or-treating: throughout the entire event.
  • Monster Stuffies: creative activity from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The Color Monster: storytelling sessions at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
  • Cloud Slime: sensory activity from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sensory Room: available throughout the day as a space to rest and regulate stimuli.

Families Will Have Access to Autism Resources, Sensory Learning, and Development

Children’s Museum Houston will also host organizations that work with children and families, including University of Houston Cognitive Development Lab, Neuhaus Education Center, The Arc of Harris County, and Easter Seals Greater Houston.

The University of Houston Cognitive Development Lab, Neuhaus Education Center, and The Arc of Harris County will be available during the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. session; Easter Seals Greater Houston will participate from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The museum cafe will be closed during this event, so families may bring their own meals and snacks.

The two museums offer KultureCity Sensory Bags

Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center are certified as Sensory Inclusive spaces by KultureCity.

During visits, KultureCity sensory bags are available with noise-reducing headphones, items for sensory regulation, visual cards, and a safety-lanyard ID.

Children’s Museum Houston also offers downloadable resources to prep for the visit, including a social story about the museum, a sensory map, a caregiver guide, and visual schedules in English and Spanish.

There Will Be More Sensory Friendly Days in 2026 and 2027

After the October sessions, Children’s Museum Houston has scheduled new Sensory Friendly Days for December 14, 2026, February 15, 2027 and April 5, 2027.

Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center will have another day on April 19, 2027.
