Calavera with Calavera 2026: The Tradition Continues — Date, Tickets & Schedule

Teatro Índigo Celebrates Its 13th Season on November 1 in Zilkha Hall, with a Spanish-language Production and English Subtitles.

The play “Calavera con Calavera” will return to Houston on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center. Teatro Índigo will present the thirteenth season of this production dedicated to the Day of the Dead, featuring live music, folkloric dance, and a story about Mexican traditions. The performance will be in Spanish, with English subtitles.

The performance will take place in downtown Houston, at 800 Bagby St. The general admission price announced by the Hobby Center is $39, with discounts available for students and seniors.

The Burgos Family Returns to Celebrate the Day of the Dead

For 13 seasons, “Calavera con Calavera” has brought to the stage a story inspired by the customs that accompany the Day of the Dead. The play follows the Burgos family, whose members gather each year at the Calvario Ranch to remember their loved ones and keep alive a celebration that has marked different generations.

While they prepare the family altar, the characters explain the meaning of the offerings, the traditional foods, the candles, and other elements of this celebration. The calaveritas literarias, humorous verses that play with the idea of death, and La Catrina, one of the most recognizable characters of the Mexican tradition, also appear.

The story blends family memories with moments of humor, music, and dance. Its development allows the audience to understand the meaning of the offerings and the importance of remembering those who have passed away.

The original production was written by Eddie González, who is also part of the cast, and features stage direction by Sureya Mir and musical direction by José Vázquez.

Teatro Índigo Celebrates Its Second Presentation at the Hobby Center

The 2026 season marks the return of “Calavera con Calavera” to the Hobby Center, where the company first presented the play in 2025, after several years of performances at other Houston venues, including Miller Outdoor Theatre.

“Returning to the stage once again with this play is undoubtedly a great honor, and we are grateful for the support of the entire community who will come to see us year after year,” said Eddie González, writer and actor of the production.

González highlighted that this will be the second time the show is presented at the Hobby Center and expressed his desire to continue bringing the story to new audiences.

This year’s production will also feature the participation of Houston Ballet Folklórico, Danza Chicawa of Conroe, and singers Nancy Ilyria and José Ignacio Cortes, known as “El Big Charro.”

The inclusion of these groups and artists allows theater, music, and dance to come together around the same story, in a celebration that Teatro Índigo has presented for more than a decade.
