The series “The Trial,” in addition to featuring a plot that touches a highly sensitive topic such as sexual abuse, also features a top-tier cast led by Eugenio Derbez and Pedro Alonso. The series follows two fathers on opposite sides in a sexual assault case involving their children.
Derbez plays “Miguel Portillo” and Alonso brings to life “Raúl Huerta,” two men pushed to the limit as they confront questions of justice, power, and how far a father will go to protect his child.

“The Trial” arrives on the ViX platform after having premiered on Amazon Prime Video in September. Now a broader audience will be able to watch this story inspired by real-life events, created and written by Daniel Krauze, based on an investigation by León Krauze, with additional contributions to the screenplay.
Pedro Alonso talks about the impact of “The Trial” on the audience
“People tell me: ‘The series made me sick, the series made me outraged, the series broke me, the series entertained me, hooked me, I watched it in a day and there were moments when I didn’t even know what to think and then you hated me and then you loved me.’ That means that the vertigo we felt at the beginning, where we asked: What are we getting into here, how are we going to do it, will we be able to find the right track? I feel that we have added our grain of sand to a conversation that matters,” shared Pedro Alonso.
Although this story unfolds in Mexico, Derbez assures that these situations occur everywhere, and that is why he seeks to talk about the issue and to raise awareness.
“Sadly, it is not a problem only in Mexico, it is a problem that happens all over the world. We just saw it recently with Cornell University in the United States, which was a scandal. We have seen it with the Epstein Files. We have seen it around the world and at all levels, but well, it is a topic that had to be addressed and that is tackled here with a lot of honesty, with a lot of truth.”
Developing such strong characters and presenting their realities was not an easy task for the actors, and Alonso ensures that they worked hard, but the results have been very satisfying for them.
“It is a thorny topic and one could say: ‘Why did I get into this, was it painful?’ And I did it, but sometimes in our work one has to commit and dive into it, yet the air I am left with is incredibly positive. Sometimes one has to venture into controversial zones to appreciate the value of things and of our work.”
Derbez hopes that people take away diverse messages that help them look after themselves, face whatever it takes to defend themselves, and that everything shown is part of a sad reality.
“It is not a telenovela with a happy ending,” concluded Derbez. The series “The Trial” will be available on ViX starting October 23.
