People seeking sexual health services at Houston’s public clinics should note a change effective September 1, 2026: Houston Health now recommends scheduling an appointment before coming.
Patients arriving at clinics without an appointment are still accepted, but will be attended to only when staff availability and clinic capacity allow. If the center reaches its capacity, walk-in service may be suspended during the day.

Walk-ins at the clinics continue, but care is not guaranteed
The change does not eliminate walk-in care.
Northside Health Center, Sharpstown Health Services, and Sunnyside Health and Multi-Service Center continue to accept walk-in patients for sexually transmitted infection services.
However, arriving during operating hours no longer guarantees that a person can be seen that same day. Availability depends on the number of patients, available staff, and the capacity of each center.
For that reason, Houston Health recommends calling 832-393-4220 to schedule an appointment before coming.

Northside Health Center accepts patients until 5 p.m. on Mondays

People seeking specifically PrEP or nPEP should use another number: 832-395-9800. These services require an appointment in advance.
PrEP is a preventive treatment used before a potential HIV exposure, while nPEP is used after a potential exposure. The corresponding assessment and treatment depend on each medical situation.

Houston Health offers fees based on the ability to pay
Houston Health maintains a sliding-scale fee structure based on the ability to pay and states that a person will not be excluded from services for not being able to pay.
Costs may depend on the service and the patient’s circumstances. To streamline the intake process, centers may request photo ID, health insurance card where applicable, and other documents related to the visit.
Children cannot stay in the exam room during adult clinical visits
Houston Health does not allow children to remain inside the examination room during adult clinical visits.
If a patient needs to be accompanied by a child, they must bring another responsible adult who can supervise the child outside the exam room. Clinic staff cannot supervise the child.
Failure to meet this requirement may cause the appointment to be delayed or rescheduled.
