World Cup Closures Will Affect Streets Near Houston’s Fan Festival

The FIFA Fan Festival will take over part of East Downtown during the 2026 World Cup, with installation closures, pedestrian safety measures, and dismantling around Shell Energy Stadium.

World Cup closures in Houston have already begun to alter traffic in East Downtown, where the FIFA Fan Festival will be installed during the 2026 World Cup. The area most affected will be near Shell Energy Stadium, between streets such as Hutchins, Emancipation, Dallas, Lamar, McKinney, Walker, and Polk.

The festival will run from June 11 to July 19 and will operate for all 34 match days of the World Cup, according to the official FIFA 2026 Houston portal. The City of Houston also maintains installation and dismantling closures before and after the main event.

The installation will keep street closures in place until June 10

The calendar of the City of Houston’s Special Events Office records daily closures for the FIFA Fan Fest installation from May 1 until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10.

Among the segments affected during this stage are Dallas Street, Lamar Street and McKinney Street in blocks 2200 and 2300, between Hutchins Street and Emancipation Avenue.

Also listed are closures or restrictions on Bastrop Street, in the 900 block between McKinney and Walker, and on Emancipation Avenue, in the 900 and 1000 blocks in the southwestbound direction between Walker Street and Lamar Street.

The same calendar includes Walker Street, in the 2200 and 2300 blocks between Hutchins Street and Emancipation Avenue, with dates shown from May 25 to June 10.

Polk and Hutchins Streets will have additional closures for public safety

In addition to the installation closures, the city shows public safety-related restrictions on Polk Street and Hutchins Street.

Polk Street, in the 2200 and 2300 blocks, appears with a westbound lane closure between Hutchins Street and Emancipation Avenue. The calendar also marks a full closure in the same stretch from June 6 to June 10 for public safety.

Hutchins Street, from the 900 block to the 1200 block, appears with a full closure between Polk Street and Walker Street from June 6 to June 10. St. Charles Street, in the 1300 block between Clay and Polk, also shows a closure from May 6 to June 10.

Drivers who normally cross EaDo via these streets should review their route before leaving. The area will be shared by installation work, local traffic, pedestrians, event staff, and visitors arriving before the first match.

The Fan Festival will operate every match day

The FIFA Fan Festival Houston will be free and open to the public on all World Cup 2026 match days. The official site indicates that doors will open 90 minutes before the first scheduled match of each day.

The event will include live screenings of matches on giant screens, interactive activities, food, beverages, entertainment, and rest areas. The festival will be located in East Downtown, near Shell Energy Stadium.

There will be two public entrances: one on Polk Street and another on Walker Street, the latter adjacent to Shell Energy Stadium. Attendees should allow extra time to walk, pass security screenings, and enter the festival area.

The official site also states that visitors may carry bags as long as they do not exceed 12 by 12 by 6 inches. All bags will be subject to security screening.

METRORail and rideshare will be options to avoid the street closure area

Organizers recommend using METRORail to reach the festival. The Green and Purple lines stop at the EaDo/Stadium station, located next to Shell Energy Stadium. From that station, the walk to the north entrance of the Fan Festival on Walker Street takes about five minutes.

The official portal also identifies a rideshare pickup/drop-off point at 2011 Leeland Street, near Leeland Street and St. Emanuel Street. From that lot, the walk to the south entrance on Polk Street takes about seven minutes.

For drivers, the festival site mentions more than 90,000 public parking spaces within a three-mile radius. It also notes more than 10 private parking lots within the festival’s immediate area.

The Via Futbol pedestrian route will connect the Discovery Green area with the north entrance of the Fan Festival on Walker Street. The route follows Rusk Street and takes approximately 12 minutes, with signage, shade structures, safety improvements, and ADA access, according to the official portal.

Dismantling will extend street closures into August

The closures will not end on the last day of the Fan Festival. Houston’s Special Events calendar indicates that the FIFA Fan Fest dismantling is scheduled from 12:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20 to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 2.

During that phase, street closures reappear on Dallas Street, Lamar Street, McKinney Street, and Walker Street, in blocks 2200 and 2300 between Hutchins Street and Emancipation Avenue. Bastrop Street, Emancipation Avenue, Polk Street, Hutchins Street, and St. Charles Street are also listed in areas near the festival.

Residents, workers and visitors moving around East Downtown should plan alternate routes for several weeks, even after the public activity of the Fan Festival ends on July 19.
