The free expo will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Denver Harbor. Homeowners affected by Hurricane Beryl or the May 2024 derecho will be able to obtain the physical application for the DR24 Single-Family Home Repair program there.
Houston will host this Saturday, August 22, a free expo with resources for residents affected by disasters, including assistance for homeowners whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Beryl or the May 2024 derecho.
The Houston Disaster and Recovery Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center, 6402 Market St., Houston, TX 77020. Admission is free and open to Houston residents. Pre-registration is recommended, but not required.
In addition to information on disaster preparedness and recovery, the event will have a particularly important function for homeowners still trying to repair their houses: it will be the first in-person opportunity to obtain the physical application for the DR24 Single-Family Home Repair program and to submit the required documents.
Homeowners will be able to speak with staff about requirements and documents
Program specialists will be available during the expo to answer questions about eligibility, documentation, and the application process.
The DR24 program is aimed at Houston homeowners whose primary residence was damaged by the May 2024 derecho or Hurricane Beryl.
Among the general conditions, the home must lie within the City of Houston limits and outside a floodway-designated area. The home must also have income at or below 80% of the area’s median income.
Assistance can cover up to $100,000 to repair an existing home. When the property cannot be reasonably repaired, the program contemplates up to $300,000 for a full reconstruction.
Some households will have priority through December 31
Houston will grant processing priority through December 31, 2026 to households that meet the income limits and also include at least one of these individuals:
- a household member aged 62 or older;
- a person with a disability;
- a veteran with a disability.
Households meeting the general requirements but not within those groups may also apply for assistance. The city will begin contacting those applicants after the priority period.
Submitting an application does not automatically guarantee assistance. The program will review the household’s eligibility, the property damages, and the documentation before approving any assistance.
Applications can also be requested by phone starting Monday
The Saturday expo will be the first point to obtain the physical application and submit documentation, but it will not be the only opportunity.
Starting on Monday, August 24, interested homeowners can call 832-394-6200 to request an application package. Once issued, each applicant will receive an identification number to track their case.
For now, applications cannot be completed or submitted online. Completed packages must be delivered through the program’s authorized methods.
The process can take up to eight weeks when the application is complete. Missing documents can delay the review.
The expo will be free in Denver Harbor
