The Astros Foundation will host a supply drive in Houston to support the victims of the recent earthquakes in Venezuela.
The event will take place this Thursday, July 2, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Union Station, in Daikin Park, located at 501 Crawford Street, Houston, TX 77002. The initiative is conducted in partnership with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), an organization focused on humanitarian response and emergency relief.
Fans attending the Astros game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, July 3, will also be able to bring donations. Items will be collected at all stadium entrances.
The Astros’ collection will be at Union Station all day Thursday
The main collection will be available for eleven hours at Union Station, inside the Daikin Park complex.
The hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2. The indicated location to drop off the items is 501 Crawford Street, in downtown Houston.
The aid is focused on immediate needs for people affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela. The list includes non-perishable foods, basic items for temporary housing, hygiene products, supplies for babies and children, and items for pets.
The effort adds to other community initiatives that have emerged in the Houston area in recent days to respond to the emergency in Venezuela, especially among organizations, volunteers, and Venezuelan families living in the region.
There will also be a collection during the game against Tampa Bay
In addition to Thursday’s event, the Astros will receive donations on Friday, July 3, during the game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Fans will be able to bring items to the stadium that day. The collection will take place at all entry gates, allowing supplies to be handed over before entering the game.
Friday’s format may facilitate participation by people who had already planned to attend the game or who cannot pass through Daikin Park during Thursday’s hours.
When Houston Embraces Venezuela
The foods requested by the Astros must be non-perishable
The list of items requested includes foods that can be stored and transported easily.
Among the accepted foods are canned proteins, such as chicken, beef, tuna, Vienna sausages, and sardines. Canned fruits, dried fruits and vegetables, protein bars, crackers, beef jerky, canned beans, canned vegetables, ramen, ready-to-eat meals, and cases of water are also requested.
These products form part of the immediate relief for people who may have limited access to food, potable water, or basic services in the affected areas.
The list includes new items for temporary housing
The collection will also receive items for temporary housing and protection needs.
Among the requested supplies are new sleeping bags, new tents, new cots, new air mattresses, new suitcases, blankets, pillows, new backpacks, new work gloves, and new work boots.
Protective suits, KN95 masks or respirator masks, hand and foot warmers, large industrial trash bags, tarps, duct tape, flashlights, AA, AAA, and D batteries, portable radios, first aid kits, Lifestraw water filters, lightweight solar-powered flashlights, and external solar-powered power banks will also be accepted.
Hygiene products, babies, and pets are also included
The requested aid is not limited to foods and emergency items.
The drive will accept toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, and wet wipes.
For babies and children, diapers, wipes, new bottles, child hygiene products, and new clothing will be collected.
The list also includes items for pets, such as water bowls, leashes, sturdy pads, chew toys, treats for dogs or cats, fur brushes, pet shampoo or conditioner, and transport crates.
The Astros’ collected aid will depart from Houston to Venezuela
The items collected will be transported from Houston as part of a relief operation coordinated by the Astros Foundation and Global Empowerment Mission.
MLB information indicates the supplies will be moved in two trucks to Miami and then shipped to Venezuela on a 757 cargo aircraft. The mission is being coordinated by Jim Crane, owner of the Astros, together with Omar López, the team’s bench coach.
The Daikin Park collection will take place on Thursday, July 2, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Union Station, 501 Crawford Street, Houston, TX 77002. Fans will also be able to drop off donations on Friday, July 3 at the stadium entrances during the Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays game.
