The runoff election is approaching to determine who will be the candidate to advance to the general election for the Senate representing Texas. In the March elections, Ken Paxton faced John Cornyn, the incumbent senator, and other challengers, but none of them garnered more than 50% of the votes. That is why, on May 26, the second runoff election is taking place.
Both Republican candidates sought Donald Trump’s backing, and he promised to give it, but for weeks it did not materialize, and it was not until May 19 that he weighed in.
Trump endorsed Paxton; with this action he ends more than a year of intense political lobbying and grants the Texas attorney general a significant boost in his campaign, even though early voting had begun a day earlier.
“Ken is a true MAGA movement warrior who has always stood up for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate. John Cornyn is a good man, and I worked well with him, but he did not give me his support when times were tough,” Trump posted.
In the same post, he added that Cornyn took too long to back him in what “turned out to be a historic race for the Republican nomination and, subsequently, for the presidency itself; both resulted in crushing victories and, more importantly, gave us the country we have today.”
The winner of this election will face James Talarico, the Democratic candidate who enjoys broad support in polls conducted.
