The situation in Minneapolis remains tense as videos of ICE detentions and protests continue to surface. A lawsuit filed by the state of Minnesota and its major cities to halt the increase in immigration enforcement operations is a topic of discussion within the Donald Trump administration.
From the White House, there are calls urging a judge to reject this lawsuit.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the Department of Justice characterized the lawsuit, filed shortly after the fatal shooting of Renee Good at the hands of an immigration agent, as “legally unfounded”.
The lawyers argued that the Department of Homeland Security is acting within its legal authority to enforce immigration laws. Operation Metro Surge has made the state safer by detaining more than 3,000 people who were in the country illegally, according to an official government statement. They accuse that state of seeking to veto the enforcement of federal law.
It is believed that in the coming days the judge’s decision will be announced, and from there a change in Minnesota’s situation will depend, or it could remain the same if the judge rules in favor of the federal government.
Meanwhile, media outlets such as CNN report that Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota; Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis; and other local officials have already received subpoenas from the Department of Justice.
