Missed Your Tax Filing Deadline? You Can Still File

As is well known, the deadline to file taxes or ‘taxes’ is April 15; however, many people for various reasons were unable to complete the return. Therefore, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) informs taxpayers that they should submit their federal tax return as soon as possible.

If not, those who did not report their earnings from the previous year may face fines and interest that can continue to accrue.

If you were among those who requested an extension that grants additional time to file the return, you should note that it does not exempt you from taxes owed. Because interest and penalties will continue to accumulate on the taxes owed until the balance is paid in full.

The IRS makes it easier for taxpayers who need to file their return for the 2025 tax year by offering electronic filing options on the IRS Free File portal, which is available at IRS.gov until October 15, 2026, the date the extension expires.

If you owe the IRS and cannot pay the full amount of taxes owed, you still must file your tax return and pay as much as possible. There are options for taxpayers who need help paying their tax bill.

Additionally, taxpayers could qualify for penalty relief if they have filed their return and paid on time during the last three years and meet other important requirements.

Taxpayers can also apply online for a payment plan, including installment agreements. The Business Tax Account allows eligible taxpayers and their designated officials to view tax balances, make payments, and review the payment history. Those who pay electronically will receive an immediate confirmation after submitting the payment.

The IRS urges taxpayers who have not yet filed their tax return to consider seeking the help of a tax preparer. The agency offers resources for those who need someone to prepare their tax return. This is the Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications; it can help taxpayers find return preparers who have professional credentials recognized by the IRS or who have met the requirements for the Annual Filing Season Program.
