Youth America Grand Prix Makes Its First Appearance in Houston

In a cultural and educational milestone of great significance for the city, Houston Ballet serves as host of the finals of the 2026 Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) in Houston for the first time, bringing to the city the world’s largest ballet scholarship competition for students and more than 2,000 of the world’s most talented young dancers.

From May 10 to 18 at the Wortham Theater Center, this week-long event cements Houston and the Houston Ballet as an international reference center for ballet, artistic education and emerging talent.

The dancers competing in the Finals have been meticulously selected from among more than 15,000 students from around the world, making their arrival in Houston a watershed moment, not only for the ballet community but for the city’s cultural landscape as a whole.

Throughout the week, Houston will welcome dancers, families, educators and artistic leaders from around the world to participate in an immersive program that includes:

High-level masterclasses delivered by internationally renowned directors and educators.

Competitive performances judged by a world-class jury, with scholarships and professional opportunities awarded at leading ballet schools and companies.

A closing gala that will feature the most acclaimed ballet stars of today performing alongside the next generation of artists.

As the hosting organization, the Houston Ballet plays a fundamental role in welcoming and supporting this global community, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a destination of excellence for top-tier education and artistic training.

The artistic directors of the Houston Ballet, Julie Kent and Stanton Welch AM, stated: “We are honored to host the 2026 Youth America Grand Prix Finals and to support the next generation of young dancers. As a leading cultural and educational institution in Houston, we are proud to welcome the international ballet community to our city and to collaborate with YAGP to offer a week filled with performances, training and extraordinary opportunities. This is a watershed moment for both Houston and the future of ballet.”

YAGP will present its emblematic Gala “Stars of Today, Stars of Tomorrow” at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York on April 16, as well as the International Festival of Dance Schools on April 18; the latter will feature Houston Ballet II, the company’s youth company, marking the latter’s return for the first time since 2019. In addition, another Gala performance will be offered in Houston on May 17, celebrating the conclusion of YAGP’s 2026 season.

The 2026 Finals position the city as the premier destination for the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition.

Additionally, in March YAGP auditions will be held in Houston, giving local and regional dancers the opportunity to compete close to home to qualify for the Finals, reinforcing Houston’s role as a leader in ballet training and arts education.
