Fernanda Castillo and Alfonso Herrera Are Siblings in The House of the Spirits

As a project that highlights Latin American literature, the actors describe the series “The House of the Spirits”, an adaptation of the book of the same title by Chilean writer Isabel Allende. In this case it is produced for Prime, the platform where it will premiere on April 29.

This family saga tells the epic story of a proud and passionate family, of secret loves and of a bloody revolution. The passions, struggles, and secrets of the Trueba family span a century of violent social changes, culminating in a crisis that throws the proud and tyrannical patriarch, together with his beloved granddaughter, onto opposing sides.

Leading the cast is also actor Alfonso Herrera, in the role of “Esteban Trueba.”

“They are iconic characters in Latin American literature,” said Herrera. “They are very complex characters, full of layers, that I had never before faced a challenge of these characteristics, because when you are invited to participate in a project there is a specific window of time and in this character I had to interpret him from his youth to his death,” he added.

Fernanda describes this opportunity as “very fertile” in her acting career; she also highlights how important each character is in her career and how she feels that Peruvians choose her.

“In real life you do the auditions and ask for the character, but in the mystical plane the character chooses you and if it chooses you it’s because you have something to tell to complement that character.”

This series has the approval of Isabel Allende, the creator of the book, and also the backing of Eva Longoria, who produces this series.

“It is an honor and the responsibility goes hand in hand with that pressure. It is a luxury to have the support of Isabel Allende and Eva Longoria as a producer; it adds to the project. Isabel commented that this project is something that comes very close to what she imagined from the beginning. There was an exercise in the 1990s with a film funded by American and German money, filmed in Portugal and Denmark. Now, this is different; it is made in Latin America with actors who speak Spanish; that gives it a much more powerful DNA, and that is what this project needed, and having Isabel Allende’s blessing is something very special,” Herrera said.

In total there are eight episodes; three installments will be released, and despite the time, for Herrera this remains a story with which many identify themselves.

“A story as timely as who we are as Latin Americans. It is a mural, a fresco, a very broad crucible of our vices and virtues as Latin Americans. It speaks of our past, of our culture and of our lineage.”
