Houston School Districts Cancel Classes Monday Due to Extreme Cold Forecast

Most districts in the Houston metropolitan area announced the cancellation of classes in Houston, as well as the closure of offices for Monday, while Southeast Texas enters an extreme cold watch.

The forecast of a weekend with winter-like conditions led many school districts in the metropolitan area to announce that classes in Houston and the surrounding areas would be canceled on Monday, with campus closures, district offices, and after-school programs shut down. Educational authorities said the measure aims to reduce risks for students and staff amid the drop in temperature and the potential ice on streets and roads.

According to reports issued by the districts themselves, much of Southeast Texas was placed under an extreme cold watch from Saturday night through Monday morning, with the possibility of subzero temperatures, freezing rain, and north wind gusts. In some cases, in addition to school closures, events and extracurricular activities over the weekend were also canceled.

Extreme Cold Watch: What to Expect in Southeast Texas

The cancellations occur as winter conditions are forecast for the region. The notices mention possible subzero temperatures, freezing rain, and winds with north gusts, a scenario that typically increases the risk of slippery surfaces and dangerous travel, especially in the early hours of the day.

In light of that outlook, several districts explained that they will monitor the weather and guidance from local authorities to decide whether there will be further closures. For now, the confirmed information is that classes are canceled in Houston and the surrounding area on Monday, with additional adjustments to activities and operations.

Classes Canceled in Houston: List of Districts Closing on Monday

These are the school systems and area schools that reported there will be no classes on Monday:

  • Houston ISD: will close all of its schools and its central office. The district noted it will inform on Sunday about possible closures for Tuesday and that updates will be disseminated through ParentSquare, its YouTube channel, social media, and its website. Superintendent Mike Miles told staff to stay alert to communications from their supervisors for any changes or essential duties.

  • Spring Branch ISD: will close facilities; athletics and after-school programs are also canceled.

  • Humble ISD: will not have classes on Monday.

  • Conroe ISD: will close district schools and offices.

  • Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (Cy-Fair): will close schools and facilities “as a precaution”; extracurricular events and after-school activities are canceled. Updates will be sent on its website, social media, and SchoolMessenger.

  • Fort Bend ISD: will close schools and offices; events, after-school activities, and extended-learning programs are canceled. The district said it would announce updates on its website, local media, social media, and via its mass mail system (Skyward). It also activated a severe weather hotline: (281) 634-4636.

  • Aldine ISD: will close campuses and offices; will inform via website, social media, text messages, and calls.

  • Crosby ISD: will close on Monday and said it will provide an update on possible closures on Tuesday afternoon.

  • Tomball ISD: will close on Monday; authorities noted they would work with a meteorologist and with other Region 4 districts over the weekend to determine decisions for Tuesday.

  • Dayton ISD: will close on Monday and cancel weekend and Monday after-school activities; notices will be shared on its website and official channels.

  • La Porte ISD: will close schools and offices “as a precaution” and also canceled Monday activities.

  • Needville ISD: canceled classes on Monday. The district noted that, if roads are clear and it is safe to travel, the high school could hold a voluntary practice after 2 p.m.; players will be notified and absences will not be penalized if someone cannot attend.

  • Harmony Public Schools (Houston area): reported that its campuses will be closed on Monday.

  • The Woodlands Christian Academy: will close on Monday.

  • Pearland ISD: will close district schools and offices.

  • Southwest Public Schools: will close on Monday.

Activities and Restrictions: Weekend Cancellations

In addition to Monday’s closure, some districts outlined operational adjustments for the weekend. Humble ISD stated that all scheduled activities must conclude by 3 p.m. Saturday. It also noted that groups will not be allowed to travel outside the district from Saturday through Monday, and staff will not have access to district facilities after 3 p.m. Saturday.

Other school systems reported cancellations of athletics, after-school programs, and school events, as part of an effort to limit travel and reduce exposure to conditions that could become dangerous if ice or freezing rain forms.

What About Tuesday? Pending Decisions and How to Stay Informed

Although Monday’s closure has already been confirmed by most districts, several are still evaluating what will happen on Tuesday. Houston ISD said it would announce on Sunday about possible closures for Tuesday. Spring Branch ISD stated it is still too early to decide and will continue to monitor conditions and guidance from area officials. Tomball ISD also anticipated that it would issue a final decision “as soon as possible.”

While a decision is made on whether Houston classes will also be canceled on Tuesday, the districts’ own guidance is to follow only their official channels: websites, school messaging systems, mass emails, social media, and, in the case of Houston ISD, ParentSquare and its YouTube channel.

What Families Should Consider Today

For now, what is confirmed is that Houston classes are canceled on Monday and that multiple districts have also suspended weekend activities and events. School authorities emphasized that safety is the priority given forecasts of subzero temperatures, possible freezing rain, and strong winds.

Districts urged families to stay tuned to official announcements and to decisions that may be announced between Sunday and Monday, depending on how the weather evolves. For those with scheduled school activities, each system indicated it will post updates through its usual channels.
