Protest Against CERAWeek: Protesters Marched from City Hall to the George R. Brown Convention Center in Opposition to the Expansion of Fossil Fuels at the Start of the Energy Conference
More than 100 people marched Monday through downtown Houston in a protest against CERAWeek, the annual gathering that brings together executives from the energy sector and government representatives.
The march began at Houston City Hall and moved to the George R. Brown Convention Center, where the conference is taking place.
The march progressed from City Hall to the convention center
The group walked through several downtown streets with banners and slogans against the fossil fuel industry. During the route, the demonstrators highlighted environmental and health impacts linked to refineries, petrochemical plants, and landfills.
The protest coincided with the first day of CERAWeek, an event that each year brings together in Houston companies such as BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell, along with technology firms and government representatives.
Environmental groups organized the march
The march was organized by Texas Campaign for the Environment, an organization focused on climate issues. According to the group, the objective was to raise visibility of the effects of fossil fuel expansion on communities near industrial infrastructure.
Among the points raised, they cited air and water pollution, as well as economic impacts on Gulf coastal regions.

Participants noted impacts on nearby communities
Some attendees noted that they live near industrial facilities and have observed direct effects in their surroundings.
They also mentioned the proximity of homes to refineries and petrochemical plants in various parts of the Houston metropolitan area.
Other participants came from outside the state. One of them indicated that oil extracted in regions such as the Permian Basin is transported to Houston for processing.
References to other cases of pollution in the country
During the march, some demonstrators carried messages related to refinery operations in other cities across the United States.
Cases of pollution in California and New Mexico were mentioned as part of a pattern that, according to the participants, recurs in different regions with a presence of the energy industry.
